download 1Last week, the weather in New York City made a drastic change from comfortably cool to unbearably freezing.

While we've already rounded up cold-weather essentials like winter coatsfleece jackets, and beanies to help keep you warm, sometimes they're not enough.

Thermal underwear or long johns are a great way to comfortably layer up when the outside temperature is too cold to bear.

If you work outside, enjoy cold-weather sports, or simply want to knock off the chill when commuting to work, having thermal underwear is a must. You can even wear them when lounging around the house.

Brands like Patagonia, REI, Smartwool, and Hanes make some of the best options to keep you warm. Whether you're looking for tops, bottoms, or one one-piece suits, you'll find it here.

Don't freeze this winter. Check out the best thermal underwear, below:

The company behind 'smart underwear' just got smarter with a new collection of high-tech workout gear

Mack Weldon AirknitX

  • Mack Weldon, the men's clothing startup best known for its underwear, recently released a new line of workout gear called the AIRKNITx collection.
  • AIRKNITx is designed with the company's lightest, most breathable fabric, and a wicking, anti-odor finish, making it perfect for regulating your body's temperature and keeping you dry and comfortable during workouts.
  • I tested the entire collection and found it was great for comfortable layering, whether I was working out or simply commuting to work.

A lot of men settle for cheap clothes because they don't know that better options exist. If you're the type to buy whichever 8-pack of underwear is on sale, you may wonder how much better can boxers get? Well, Mack Weldon can answer that question.

The startup tasked itself to reinvent and update menswear essentials, creating "smart underwear for smart guys," and that's not just some absurd claim. Last year, I tested out Mack Weldon's Silver Boxer Briefs and found them be superior in comfort and longevity over other brands.

The company is applying that philosophy to other clothes now. The AIRKNITx Winter Collection is the latest example. Designed to improve your comfort during your workouts, the collection includes a long sleeve T-shirt, performance tights, and of course, underwear.

Using a combination of polymide, polyester, and elastane, AIRKNITx is Mack Weldon's lightest, most breathable fabric. The special fabric also has a moisture-wicking and anti-odor finish, so you stay cool and dry without smelling like you just worked out.

For the long sleeve T-shirt and performance tights, I'd go as far to say that you don't have to worry about washing them after every wear.

Mack Weldon AIRKNITx

Cold weather workouts can be tricky to dress for. Your first instinct is to bundle up, but once you get moving it's easy to overheat. What makes AIRKNITx so great is it's the perfect material to wear in the winter because it's designed to help regulate your body's temperature.

I've has a few good experiences with Mack Weldon's already, so I expected the same from the AIRKNITx. The company sent over the full collection for me to try out and I'm so glad I did.

If you're looking for complete comfort for your workouts or daily wear, Mack Weldon's AIRKNITx Collection is for you.

The Boxer Briefs

I thought it'd be difficult for the AIRKNITx Boxer Briefs to beat the other pair's comfort, but I was wrong. I've actually come to prefer the AIRKNITx Boxer Brief over other Mack Weldon boxer briefs, mainly because of its breathability. One of my favorite features on the Silver Boxer Briefs was its cooling mesh zones, but the AIRKNITx pair allows air to pass through everywhere — not just the mesh zones.

In addition to being highly breathable, the briefs are made out of a soft four-way stretch microfiber. The combination makes for the lightest and most comfortable pair of underwear I've worn. Whether you're wearing them for a rigorous workout or under multiple layers on a cold winter day, you won't overheat wearing these.

Mack Weldon AIRKNITx Boxer Briefs, $28

The Long Sleeve T-Shirt

One of the worst things you can wear when working out in the winter is a heavy cotton long-sleeve shirt or sweatshirt. You'll be hot during the workout and drenched in sweat afterward. With the AIRKNITx Long Sleeve, you won't experience that; its moisture-wicking properties and antimicrobial finish are ideal because you'll stay cool and dry throughout your workout. The shirt also has targeted mesh zones on the armpits for even better cooling.

What I like best about the long sleeve is that it doubles as a great undershirt, too. Even when you're not working out, you're prone to sweating with multiple layers on. I wore this under my sweater on a cold day and was warm when outside and never too hot when inside.

Mack Weldon AIRKNITx Long Sleeve T-Shirt, $48

The Performance Tights

The AIRKNITx Performance Tight is the solution to staying warm without the added bulk of sweatpants.

Think of it as a longer version of the AIRKNITx Boxer Brief. It's super comfortable and has targeted mesh zones on the lower back and groin areas. You'll find yourself wearing these performance tights for more than just workouts, because they're just that good. What I like best about them is their ability to serve as long underwear you wear can indoors and outdoors. I've worn heavier pairs of thermals that are great for the extreme cold, but made me too hot when I got inside. AIRKNITx's temperature regulation will keep you warm when you need to be warm, and cool you down before you start sweating.

best underwear men4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • If there’s one article of clothing that you ought to care about, it’s your underwear. Our top pick is the Tommy John collection because you can choose from many different styles of underwear and all of them are seriously comfortable.

You probably don’t give as much thought to your bottom layer as you do to your top layers, but really, you should. Guys, we’re talking about underwear here — that all-important article of clothing that needs to be as comfortable for lounging about as it does for a long day of meetings. Luckily, there are plenty of companies these days hoping to make your underwear buying experience as easy and comfortable as the underwear itself.

Even if you prefer to buy other articles of clothing in shrink-wrapped packs of three, you’ll probably want to give a bit more thought to how you purchase your skivvies. After all, nothing can ruin your day quite as well as an uncomfortable pair of boxers, briefs, or something in between. When making that all-important decision about where to swipe your credit card, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind.

First and foremost, what kind of guy are you? Do you opt for trunks, briefs, boxers, or something else altogether? Regardless of what you choose, you’ll certainly be able to find something that suits your needs.

You’ll also want to keep material in mind. While white cotton may have been the name of the game when you were a kid, the underwear industry has changed, and so have you. Now, you can have underwear made of “non-pilling” micro modal fabric. You may not know what that means, but all you need to know is that it’s really comfortable.

And although this may be the least of your concerns, please do consider prints and patterns. Before you write this off as something that “only the ladies” are worried about, let me point out (as a lady myself) that you’re likely not the only person to ever see your unmentionables. So if you want to get a good laugh (in a good way), you may consider a rather surprising design or color combination.

In any case, regardless of what underwear you choose from our favorite underwear purveyors, we’re confident that you’ll be well taken care of.

Although Tommy John makes our favorite underwear, you might also like Bonobos for unparalleled fit, Rhone for an active lifestyle, MeUndies for the most exciting prints, and Gap for affordability.

The best underwear overall

Why you'll love it: Tommy John's underwear is super comfortable, well made, and expertly designed to fit perfectly.

You’ll never truly get underwear that is 100% customized to your body, but with Tommy John's underwear, you may just feel like they were custom made for you.

While you may be familiar with the typical brief, boxer brief, and boxer options when it comes to underwear, Tommy John actually sells a total of five different fits so you can choose the underwear that works best for your body.

Tommy John offers boxer briefs, relaxed fit boxers, trunks, a square cut, and briefs. All of the styles are designed to move with your body without any need for adjustments. The inseams range from eight inches (longer than most) all the way down to zero. But because there’s so much variation, it’s more likely that you’ll be able to find a pair of Tommy Johns that suit your body type and your preferences.

There are also five different proprietary fabrics to choose from, including the luxuriously soft Second Skin, the moisture-wicking Cool Cotton, the lightweight Air, the anti-microbial 360 Sport, and the everyday Go Anywhere fabric.

Additionally, Tommy John has a contour pouch that “promises to keep everything in place and prevent the wearers from making unnecessary adjustments." The company is also proud to boast a no wedgie guarantee. I will say that my proxy reviewer (the boyfriend) backed up these claims in his own testing.

And it’s not just the boyfriend who has given his stamp of approval to this underwear. No fewer than 1,500 reviewers on the Tommy John website have said some variation of “these are the most comfortable underwear ever.”

The Savvy Backpacker called these underwear legitimately excellent, too.

Pros: Wide variety in both fit and in material options, great fit, extremely comfortable material

Cons: These are some pricey underwear, but they’re worth the cost

The underwear with the most careful fit

Why you'll love it: If you think you should buy your underwear like you buy your pants, Bonobos is for you.

Bonobos has only been offering underwear for a matter of months, but already, the company’s decision to make even the smallest of clothes with the same level of detail used in big(ger ticket) items has paid off.

You see, when you order your boxer briefs or trunks from Bonobos, you’re not asked whether you’re a Small, a Medium, or a Large. Rather, you’re asked for your waist size. After all, why should buying your underpants be any different from buying your pants?

As a result of this exacting sizing, Bonobos underwear really do fit in a more exacting way. Sure, this is probably particularly beneficial for a few guys who are right in between sizes, but even if you’re generally fine with the generic sizes, there’s no reason to forego customization if it’s staring you in the face.

In addition to the superior fit of Bonobos, these boxer briefs and trunks also offer something that most others don’t — a seamless look. As Men’s Journal noted (and my boyfriend helped me verify), “there’s no danger of having that annoying line showing through a pair of slim-cut trousers where these boxer briefs end, the way there can be with some other brands.”

Thanks to the cotton, acrylic, and spandex, material combination, this underwear cuts a sleek profile while wicking away sweat. Plus, there’s a roll-proof waistband and a few mesh panels that facilitate airflow where you need it.

It took Bonobos a total of 15 months to perfect their underwear, and suffice it to say, practice makes perfect.

Pros: Carefully engineered fit, no show design, great airflow, and say goodbye to rolling waistbands

Cons: At $34 a pair, these are not inexpensive underwear

Shop all Bonobos underwear, starting at $34

The best underwear for athletes

Why you'll love it: If you’re a guy on the go, the underwear from athletic company Rhone may just catch your eye.

While Rhone isn’t in and of itself an underwear company, that seems to work for and not against the brand. Perhaps known best for its Gold Fusion technology, which as The Manual said, “set the standard for men’s activewear,” Rhone’s underwear is meant for athletes. And it lives up to its expectations.

I figured that Rhone knew what it was doing when it came to making garments for under your clothes given how popular its lined shorts air. New York Magazine calls the company’s Swift lined shorts “a revelation,” noting that the built-in boxer briefs felt “incredible.” And now, you don’t have to don a pair of running shorts every time you want to wear comfortable boxer briefs.

Rhone has exactly two options available on its website, which means that you won’t run into any paradox of choice problems. You can either opt for the 5-inch Rhone Boxer Brief, which as you might imagine, has a 5-inch inseam, or the 5-inch SeaCell Boxer Brief.

The Rhone Boxer Brief is perhaps the more straightforward pair. They’re lightweight and, as my proxy reviewers attested, extremely comfortable. There’s also what Rhone calls “a carefully engineered 'rocket pocket' with a seamless fly opening,” which also seems to be a big hit in the household. A happy customer called these boxers the “Best underwear on the market,” and another said he would be ordering additional pairs.

The SeaCell Boxer Brief makes a bit bigger of a promise, with its SeaCell technology. This material purports to integrate seaweed into its fibers and is said to transfer Vitamin E and other nutrients to the skin. While we can’t vouch for that claim, the boxers are just as comfortable as the alternative.

Pros: Comfortable even during runs or workouts, and straightforward options means you won’t waste time on inconsequential considerations

Cons: One reviewer noted that the fit wasn’t quite as true as other Rhone products

Costco is a men's underwear paradise (COST)

Costco

  • Costco, the member's-only warehouse store, sells more than just bulk cereal.
  • It also sells a variety of underwear and accessories, which men rave about.

You'd never guess that the place where you can buy 30 packs of toilet paper and breakfast cereal by the cubic foot would also be the place where you could get all your undergarment shopping done.

But it is.

Costco is secretly one of the best places for men to get every single undergarment they need. You'll find quality socks, undershirts, belts, and even underwear — all by Costco's Kirkland Signature private label.

It's all in the high-quality manufacturers Costco sources from and the exacting standards they hold for the products that carry the Signature label.

Unfortunately, it's a bit of a mystery who exactly manufactures these products, as both retailers and manufacturers prefer to keep mum about the relationships. If you can live with the uncertainty, then the rewards are plentiful — as are the steals, since the items are quite a bit cheaper than their name-brand counterparts.

SocksKirkland wool socks

My favorite winter socks, the Kirkland Signature Men's Outdoor Trail Sock, is one of the best steals in all of men's sockdom. A four-pack of the merino wool blend socks is a mere $12 — an incredibly small amount of money for wool socks of this quality.

I've bought many over the years, and exactly zero have failed me so far. They're warm, soft, and, most importantly, comfortable.

Buying a comparable pair from an established wool sock brand like Smartwool would have cost $19 for one pair. Unfortunately, the socks are so popular, this year's run is already sold out, and the resellers are offering the socks for as much as double the retail price. It's worth keeping an eye out when they return in September.

Belts

Another of my favorite items from Costco is the Kirkland Signature Men's Leather Belt. Though it costs a mere $18, the belt is made with Italian full-grain leather, which is the absolute best type of leather you can buy for a belt. The belt has lasted me years and still looks just as great as it did on day one. It's the perfect size, weight, and color, and I have every confidence it will last me years and years to come.

A comparable full-grain belt might cost anywhere from $50 to $100. Another steal from the bulk giant.

Undershirts

kirkland t shirts

Guys swear by the Kirkland Signature Men's Crew Neck Tee undershirts and, from my personal experience, it's easy to see why. The shirts are luxurious and thick, bucking the trend of off-brand clothing being weaker or thinner than their counterparts. They'll last quite a long while.

It's $19 for a six-pack, which might be a bit more expensive than undershirts you'd find at Walmart or Target, but the quality is much better, and the cotton is thicker.

Underwear

Though I have no personal experience with the buy-it-in-bulk chain's Men's Pima Boxer Briefs, many guysclaim they're some of the softest and durable they've worn. More importantly, they claim the underwear's Pima cotton-spandex blend allows it to keep its shape and not ride up, which is one of the most important things to consider when buying cheap(er) underwear.

About $13 gets you four pairs, which is much cheaper than department stores or mall brands.

6 popular underwear startups every man should know

Tommy John

Underwear is the one piece of clothing that you (hopefully) wear every single day, no matter where you're going. Although they're a staple in every man's dresser drawers, there's a great chance you put little to no thought into picking them out.

If you're the type to aimlessly buy the cheapest 6-pack of underwear at the store, you've probably experienced pairs that ride up your legs, lose shape after a few wears, or are drenched in sweat after a workout.

Looking beyond those bundles you find in the store can be the solution all of those problems.

If your drawer is filled with tattered pairs of underwear that are equally uncomfortable and unattractive, it's time to consider some brands you might not have known existed. To help you broaden you horizons in the underwear realm, we rounded up some interesting startup companies that make amazing underwear.

Whether you're searching for high quality pairs that will never lose shape, super breathable pairs for a workout, or cool patterns and colors to match your loud personality, you'll find it here.

Check out the 6 best startup companies for men's underwear, below:

Tommy John

Shop underwear at Tommy John here, from $23.

Founded in 2008 by Tom Patterson, Tommy John was created to bring men's undergarments into the 21st century. After completely re-engineering the undershirt to be better fitting and more comfortable, the brand moved on to give underwear the same type of overhaul. Tommy John offers underwear in five styles — Boxers Briefs, Relaxed Fit Boxers, Trunks, Square Cut, and Briefs — so every guy will find his desired fit. My personal favorite is the Boxer Brief because its 8" inseam eliminates any feeling of ride up. You can read my full review on the Tommy John Go Anywhere Boxer Brief here.

Mack Weldon

Shop underwear at Mack Weldon here, from $24.

Mack Weldon prides itself in making "smart underwear for smart guys" and that's not just a gimmicky slogan. The brand uses premium materials to make products that will last much longer than most other pairs on the market. They might seem expensive, but buying quality underwear is actually cheaper than replacing worn out and stretched pairs every few months. I tried the Silver Boxer Briefs and the AIRKNITx Boxer Briefs, and had great experiences with both. The Silver is a super soft luxe feel, while the AIRKNITx pair is a lightweight and breathable — perfect for working out in.

Bonobos

Shop Bonobos Underwear here, $34 or two for $50.

Most men's underwear come in alpha sizes like small, medium, and large, but Bonobos Underwear comes in waist sizes, from 28" to 40". By using the same methodology that goes into finding the best fit in pants, you'll never have to worry about the uncertainty of general underwear sizes. Each pair of Bonobos underwear uses a stretch waistband that never restricts you, super soft anti-microbial, moisture-wicking fabric for maximum comfort, and is offered as 5" inseam boxer briefs and 3" inseam trunks. When I tested Bonobos underwear, I was genuinely surprised at the huge difference in comfort specific waist sizes provide over alpha sizes. Just order the same waist size you'd typically wear in pants and you're good to go.

A Facebook post prompted this popular men’s underwear company to finally launch a women’s collection — and they're worth every penny

tommy john main

  • Men's underwear company Tommy John can now shed its "men" moniker because it just released its highly-anticipated and requested women's collection today.
  • It continues to deliver on its 3 F's — fabric, fit, and function — in making women's underwear that doesn't bunch, roll, pill, or show lines.
  • We tried its super light Air styles as well as the soft and comfortable Second Skin styles, and we're already preparing to buy more pairs of this under-$30 underwear.
  • The debut is a clear step in the right direction for the company looking to become a household name in both men and women's clothing.

For 10 years, apparel brand Tommy John has produced the underwear, undershirts, and loungewear that guys can't get enough of. Though the company has primarily focused on growing its men's business from a simple undershirt to a whole line of clothing, it's been fielding requests for women's underwear since its launch.

The number of requests kept growing, but co-founder Erin Fujimoto says that the real turning point was seeing a Facebook photo from a woman wearing Tommy John boxer briefs, with the caption, “Tommy John underwear is the most comfortable underwear I’ve ever worn.” Fujimoto told Business Insider,

The fact that this woman was saying she couldn’t find a pair of underwear that fit her better and was more comfortable than our men's boxer briefs really stuck with me. Clearly there was a hole in the market for comfortable, functional underwear that was designed to solve the unique problems women face. I knew then that we had to design something for her.

The 3 F's — fabric, fit, and function — have dictated the company's approach to men's undershirts, underwear, and other apparel, and the strategy was no different for solving the problems women face with their underwear.

According to Fujimoto, it took two years of extensive research, development, and trials to get it right. As a busy working mother, she values function and comfort, and she personally wore every single prototype manufactured to ensure that it solved for bunching, rolling, and visible panty lines.

underwear fabricsThe debut women’s collection features two types of fabric, Air and Second Skin. Though the focus of the collection is on the underwear, it also includes tank tops made in each material (which you can read about beneath our reviews of the underwear).

The Air material is an ultra-light, mesh, anti-microbial stretch fabric with seamless, bonded edges that promise no visible panty lines and comes in three styles: Thong, Cheeky, and Brief.

Second Skin is a soft, micro-modal fabric that comes in four styles: Thong, Cheeky, Brief, and Boyshort. This proprietary fabric doesn't pill and continues to look new even after many wash and wears, a just-short-of-magical trick that Fujimoto says is accomplished by singeing the fine micro-modal fibers together to prevent little balls from appearing.

The underwear couldn't have received warmer welcomes from our team. We went in with biases about what traditional women's underwear is and came out wondering why we ever put up with that lackluster standard.

We received pairs of this new underwear to test ahead of the launch. We've been jealous of all the great underwear the men on our team have been enjoying, and now that we're getting our moment, here are our thoughts.

air cheekyMalarie Gokey, Insider Picks guides editor:

"All too often, women's underwear is designed to be sexy instead of comfortable. Tommy John made a name for itself by creating supremely comfortable underwear for men that needs no adjustments, and that philosophy has translated perfectly to Tommy John's underwear for women.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that the Second Skin Brief is the most comfortable pair of underwear I've ever worn. The breathable material is silky soft, the wide elastic waistband is smooth, and there is actually enough fabric to give full coverage everywhere you need it. I didn't have to make any adjustments during the day, either.

The Air Cheeky underwear is also wonderful as a slightly sexier style that still feels comfortable, and I can see it being great for summertime."second skin brief

Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter:

"I used to buy into the idea that women’s underwear had to be at least a little uncomfortable, but after discovering MeUndies, Everlane’s new Supima cotton underwear, and now Tommy John’s, I realize how ridiculous that idea is.

I tried the Second Skin Brief and Air Thong and both were a noticeable upgrade from my previous go-tos. Both materials feel slightly more technical (which might closely resemble the feeling of 'smoother’) than cotton. The Air is feather-light and gives you that no-feel feeling as promised, and the Second Skin material feels cool and silky to the touch. I loved both, but given the total 'airiness' of the Air line, I'll probably be grabbing a couple more of those styles in the future."

WA_WOAM182BT1_SILSC_ECOM_Alt1_15215859

Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter:

"For me, the Air Thong and Second Skin Cheeky have joined the first tier of my underwear drawer. I believe underwear collections exist in layers — the first tier that you wear every week, the second tier of somewhat flawed models, and the third tier of last resorts. Tommy John's definitely deserves its place in the coveted first line because I'm already looking forward to the next time I get to wear the Second Skin pair.

Micro-modal is one of my favorite fabrics because of how soft and comfortable it is, and in underwear form is where it shines. The wide waistband didn't dig into or squeeze my skin at all. There's a generous amount of fabric in the Cheeky, which usually lends the risk of bunching and shifting, but it wasn't until I got home and thought about it did I realize I didn't have to awkwardly adjust my underwear the entire day.

Meanwhile, the Air Thong was lightweight and felt barely there. Certain outfits dictate wearing a thong, often prompting women to give up on wearing the outfit altogether for fear of how uncomfortable the thong will be. Thanks to great designs like Tommy John's and Everlane's, I've gotten over this fear and have a new appreciation for this low-profile style."

camisoleTommy John also launched a camisole available in these two fabrics, which for Mara, even managed to outshine the underwear:

She said, "The surprising standout for me has been the Air Stay-Tucked Camisole. It's so unbelievably soft and breathable. I have plans to buy at least a couple more in case Tommy John stops making them or one gives out and refuses to whiten in the future. At $36 it's definitely more than I'd normally spend on a tank top, but then again maybe that's why I was so shocked it could be this comfortable. All in all, it still feels more luxe than an under-$40 tank."

Malarie agreed:

"Tommy John's Air Camisole is made from the same material as the Cheeky, and I love it, too. It feels super lightweight and cool on my skin. The innovative material acts like mesh to let air through while still providing full coverage."

Using the same patented design technology as the men's Stay-Tucked Undershirt, the camisole won’t roll or bunch or come untucked, providing the perfect foundational layer to wear under cardigans, button-downs, and sheer tops.

We waited a decade for Tommy John women's underwear, which takes everything great about the men's underwear and tweaks it for the cuts and colors women love. Ranging in price from $20 to $28, the styles are a little pricier than your average underwear brand's, but if our reviews are any indication, they are completely worth the investment.

best underwear 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • You have to wear it every day, so you better make sure your underwear is the most comfortable clothing you own. Tommy John makes the most comfortable women's underwear we've ever worn.

Underwear. You won’t give it a second thought if it’s fabulously comfortable, but if it’s anything less than that, it’s all you’ll be able to think about all the livelong day. And let’s be honest — you’re way too busy to waste any brain space on something as trivial as underwear. But thankfully, there are plenty of options these days that are as comfortable as they are coquettish, and you really can’t ask for more when it comes to your undergarments.

Long gone are the days of a one size fits all approach to your lingerie. Today, you have plenty of styles, cuts, patterns, and sizes to make you feel confident and sexy from the moment you begin to get dressed. After all, they say beauty comes from within, right?

When it comes to deciding what underwear is best for you, trying really is believing. Luckily, most online underwear companies today have a satisfaction guarantee, so if you receive a pair and realize that the material isn’t what you thought it would be, or the fit isn’t quite right, don’t try to force yourself into liking them. You deserve better than that.

Speaking of material, that’s certainly key to keep in mind when selecting the best undergarments for your lifestyle. Are you constantly moving around for a living, or are you generally sitting at a desk? Do you need something a bit more breathable, or are you seeking, say, fuller coverage? Ultimately, you’ll need to be sure that whatever material you’re working with is durable. After all, these are garments that you’ll be putting through the wash a lot, so be sure it can stand up to the spin cycle (unless you want to be like Justin Bieber and throw your underwear away after a single wash).

Hand in hand with material comes the underwear style. If you’re always slipping into figure-hugging dresses, you may want to consider a thong. If you’re really just looking for something to lounge around in on the weekend, perhaps consider a boyshort.

No matter what you choose from our favorite options, we’re confident that you’ll feel well-suited to take on the world and anything it throws your way.

Updated on 04/06/2018 by Malarie Gokey: Added Tommy John and Everlane underwear after testing.

Read on in the slides below to learn why Tommy John makes our favorite underwear and why you'll also love Everlane for its ethical all-cotton underwear, ThirdLove for feminine styles, MeUndies for fun patterns, Commando for the best seamless underwear, True&Co for a great hipster, and Aerie for an unbeatable price.

The best underwear overall

Why you'll love it: Tommy John has mastered the art of underwear for women with its Second Skin Brief, Air Cheekie, and Air Thong.

For too long women's underwear has been about sex appeal instead of comfort, but no longer. Tommy John's underwear is hands down the most comfortable underwear you can buy.

Tommy John may have started off with men's underwear, but its new Second Skin and Air underwear collections for women prove that the company's designers know a thing or two about what women want in a great pair of underwear. That means no scrunching, chafing, bunching, or riding up. And boy does Tommy John's underwear deliver on its promise that there will be "no adjustment needed."

The Insider Picks team tested out both the Second Skin and Air underwear collections and loved every pair. From the sexy thong and cheekie styles to the practical and attractive briefs, Tommy John's underwear is super comfortable.

I particularly loved the Second Skin Brief, which is made from 90% micro-modal and 10% Spandex. It gives full coverage everywhere you need it without embarrassing panty lines. Most importantly, it looks good, feels great, and never needs adjusting throughout the day.

The entire Second Skin collection is made from the same material, so you can choose the boyshorts, thong, or cheekie instead of the brief, too. Tommy John has lots of color options, too, including a nice deep purple, a deep rosy pink, white, black, nude, and more.

The Air collection is fantastic for hotter weather or workouts because it's made with improved ventilation, moisture wicking, and deodorizing fabric. The Air underwear comes in briefs, cheekies, and thongs that are made from 77% Nylon mesh and 23% Spandex.

I really liked the cheekie Air underwear for its comfortable fit and ventilated fabric. My fellow co-workers were also fans of the Air thong for its barely-there feel.

The only real downside here is the price, because at $22 and up, this underwear is very expensive. We recommend going with a value pack to minimize the cost a bit. Besides, you're going to want to wear these every day, so you'll need more than one pair. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: So comfortable, great fit, fun colors, many styles, innovative breathable fabric, no adjustments

Cons: Expensive

The best affordable, ethical, all-cotton underwear

Why you'll love it: Everlane's underwear collection goes back to basics with supremely soft Supima cotton that's ethically sourced and transparently priced.

If you don't want to spend $22+ on one pair of underwear, you're in luck, because Everlane just created its first underwear collection. The online company is known for its transparent pricing and ethically produced clothing, so you can feel good about the underwear you're buying.

Everlane's underwear collection features bikini, thong, hipster, and high-rise hipster styles that are all made with Supima cotton that's grown in the United States and made into underwear at ethical factories. The cotton's extra long fibers are super soft on your skin and the material is breathable.

We at Insider Picks reviewed Everlane's underwear, and we loved it. The high-rise hipster was a group favorite with its full coverage and comfortable feel. I also personally loved the regular hipster style, which is both sexy and comfortable. Those of us who prefer thongs were also favorably impressed with Everlane's take on that classic sexy style.

You can choose from heather grey, powder pink, white, and black colors. All of Everlane's underwear is completely basic, or as the ad campaign says, "No frills. No bows. No bullsh*t." It's your everyday underwear. It's made for you and puts your comfort above anything else.

Perhaps best of all, one pair of Everlane underwear costs $12, which is nearly half the price you'd pay for a pair of Tommy John's underwear. You can get a three-pack for $27, which averages out to $9 a pair.

If you're looking for affordable, high-quality underwear that's made ethically from the best material, Everlane's Supima cotton underwear is for you. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Supima cotton is soft, comfortable, breathable, variety of styles, comfortable elastic, ethical production, transparent pricing

Cons: Only basic colors

The best feminine underwear

Why you'll love it: At ThirdLove, underwear is made for women by women, and that makes all the difference in the world.

You may know ThirdLove best for its bras, which come in half cup sizes (yes they do) and have helped many women take the pain out of bra shopping. But if you thought that the company’s expertise stopped in the upstairs department, think again. ThirdLove’s underwear may not be as famous as its bras (yet), but we anticipate that will soon change.

Available in thong, cheeky, and bikini cuts, ThirdLove’s underwear is supremely comfortable, and better yet, practically invisible. All of its styles come in seamless varieties, which means that you don’t have to get a thong in order to have a no-show look. And while it’s difficult to get 340 women to agree on anything, it looks like a positive opinion of the seamless thong is about as close to a consensus as we’re going to get.

Hundreds of buyers have given the Seamless Thong an average of 4.5 out of five stars, with women noting that the “simple design” and “comfy material” contribute to an overall enjoyable wearing experience. The seamless options of ThirdLove’s underwear are made of a nylon and spandex mix, while the brand’s lace options have a rayon element in addition to the nylon and spandex.

As Sheaffer of Sheaffer Told me To noted in her own review of ThirdLove, the company offers “quite a large selection of undies to choose from.” ThirdLove sent the Insider Picks team a few pairs to try, including the seamless thong, the lace bikini, and the seamless cheeky. All three styles were very comfortable, silky smooth, and very attractive looking. We loved the fun colors and the sexy little details.

ThirdLove provides a pretty precise sizing chart that includes hip measurements down to the half inch to help you decide if you’re an extra small, medium, or xx-large. Regardless of your size, you should be able to find a pair of panties that fit your body the way it ought to. And if not, ThirdLove maintains a 100% fit guarantee, and always offers free returns and exchanges. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Careful sizing guide, comfortable material, no riding up throughout the day

Cons: Some buyers found that the material was a bit thin for their liking

  • I’ve worn bras for over a decade, but True&Co's True Body collection has the only seamless bra I've tried that actually supports and lifts cup sizes of C-DDD without wires.
  • They have a variety of styles in their True Body collection, but their V Neck Racerback, $58 is my favorite and ultimate weekday warrior.
  • The True Body collection sold out seven times after debut, and every bra falls within the range of $34 - $68.
  • Shop True&Co best-sellers directly, or take a detailed Fit Test here, which uses fit data from nearly 6 million women to make their designs smarter and recommendations more precise.

Like most people who regularly navigate Facebook, I’ve grown a bit suspicious of all the ads chasing me.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve found really great buys that way — Mahabis slippers, Daily Harvest smoothies, Mott & Bow skinny jeans, and Oliberte leather boots come to mind — but there are at least a few companies hiding in that mix who might have a big social media following, but ultimately underdeliver on their promises of comfort, quality, or fit.

True&Co, a brand I found on Facebook, piqued my interest with a wireless bra that was touted as the only one that actually offered support to larger cup sizes. In my experience, though, bras that promise to get rid of wires and magically still provide ample lift have just been telling all the girls wearing a C or larger only what they wanted to hear. But this collection is different, and stays true to the big claims.

After testing it out, the V Neck Racerback, $58, part of the True Body collection, is now my favorite bra that I own. It has quickly become my weekday warrior thanks to its impressive, buttery soft comfort and seamless, clean-lined look. And even though there aren't any wires involved, the V Neck somehow still provides support and lift.

The bonded technology means no elastic or bulky, line-disrupting seams; the wire-free channel lends support like underwire without the wire; the "super lift fabric" (a 195g tightly knit blend) provides the noticeable lift and support that usually justifies discomfort in other bras; and the molded cups prevent you from slipping out and getting the dreaded "underboob" that almost uniformly plagues these seamless, "comfort"-first bras. In other words, this bra is not what you think it is. Or, at least, it most certainly was not for me. Even for a DD cup size, this bra still delivered on its rather lofty (pun-intended) claims.

The point is, if you’re looking for a bra that is so comfortable you can forget you have it on, is completely seamless under even close fitting tops, and provides more lift than your sports bra for at least a DD, then I’d wager you’ll love the True Body V Neck Racerback — and likely any of the other True Body bras, which mostly differ based on the orientation of the straps and a U or V neck cut.

With prices between $33 and $64, you’re likely to find something that will flatter your shape, meet your lifestyle needs, and fit your budget.

True_Co._Second_Skin_V_Neck_Estate_Blue_Ed (1)

I want everyone to love their underwear as much as I've loved the V Neck Racerback, and to be as comfortable in it as I've found the True Body collection to be, but I also know that undergarments are subject to more levels of scrutiny and personal preference than most clothing. It does help when being so adamant about recommending them, though, when you consider that their debut collection sold out seven times on its own.

You can shop the beloved True Body collection directly on the site, but you’ll likely want to take their "Top 3" fit test to get instant answers about which sizes and styles you should be buying. They take into account your preferred style, fit, and your own survey answers about things like body proportions, bra fit complaints, and favorite brands (so their recommendations could fluctuate based on the style you're eyeing).

Plus, they're using the fit data of 6 million women to help you decide what to buy and to improve the fit of their products. However, if you decide to skip it, you can also find a helpful and easy-to-read conversion key at the bottom of each bra’s individual page.

In my case, I'm really glad I took the fit quiz; on my own, I would have certainly bought the wrong size.

Lk Edit_000057940023 1

If you're less interested in the True Body collection, the company also carries lingerie and underwear, as well as many Calvin & Klein bras and underwear options since the 130+-year-old underwear giant's owner, PVH, recently acquired the five-year-old True&Co (a break from form that suggests magic really is happening here).

I can't say every piece in the True Body collection will be a perfect match for everyone, but I feel confident telling people that the best wireless bra, in my opinion, is True & Co's V Neck Racerback.

If you're looking for support, lift, and love the sound of something buttery soft and seamless, you're likely going to love one of True&Co's True Body bras.

It's almost impossible to find an underwear brand with a truly consistent fit — which is why I'm sold on Mack Weldon

25507773_1184025531731764_5433965408312328833_n

  • Mack Weldon men's apparel is made using proprietary fabric blends that maximize comfort in terms of fit, cooling, and support.
  • The company makes the process of buying clothes user-friendly, with a crisp website, easy-to-follow sizing and fabric information, and a hassle-free return policy.
  • Mack Weldon apparel is simple yet stylish, fitting perfectly into a lifestyle that involves athletics, travel, and robust social and professional circles.

When it comes to underwear, men have three basic options: the brief, the boxer brief, or the boxers. When it comes to which brand a man chooses for his underwear, the list gets a bit longer. Actually, it gets dizzyingly long. And with every different underwear brand comes a different fit. In fact, often the same company will offer two slightly different products (say, briefs and boxers) that look and feel quite dissimilar despite sharing the same technical measurements. The same goes for undershirts, T-shirts, shorts, pants, and basically all men's clothing.

It can be almost impossible to find a brand with a truly consistent fit. So when you find one, you commit, sir. That's what I've done, anyway.

Every article of apparel from Mack Weldon starts with the fabric. The company offers clothing made using six different fabrics, two of with which you are surely acquainted: merino and cotton. As for the other four fabric choices from Mack Weldon, those are proprietary, and they're a cut above.

The company offers its underwear, T-shirts, and socks in their 18-Hour Jersey, 18-Hour Mesh, Silver, and Airknit blends.

The first two are named for the period of time the fabric is allowed to rest following fabrication and prior to cutting and stitching into garments; this rest period allows the fabric to naturally expand and/or contract, resulting in clothing with a softer feel and consistent fit. The 18-Hour Jersey is ideal for everyday wear, while 18-Hour Mesh garments are cooling and light and ideal for sporting activities. Their Silver fabrics incorporate actual anti-bacterial silver particles that prevent odors and keep you feeling fresher and cleaner. And Mack Weldon Airknit garments are form-fitting and flattering while remaining light, breathable, and comfortable. Whether worn to bed or to the gym, they're a fine choice for casual men's apparel.

14691259_893761970758123_6071913297761976398_o

I've said several times how Mack Weldon keeps things simple, but some concrete examples might help.

First off, the company only offers a select handful of products. Beyond underwear, T-shirts, and socks, they currently sell two types of long pants, two types of shorts, a few polos, a few sweatshirts, one jacket, a bit of swimwear, and a few accessories.

The website is laid out in crisp format, with the option to shop by fabric blend, by apparel type, or of course by specific item. Each garment has a link to a sizing chart, and when different cuts are available, they are explained concisely. ("Slim Fit: For a modern, refined look. Size up for a more relaxed fit" e.g.)

When you blend a small, well-curated collection made from high-quality materials with a painless shopping experience, you get a brand worth your consideration, and likely one that will earn your commitment.

Screen Shot 2018 04 30 at 12.11.14 PM

Why is simplicity at the core of the Mack Weldon brand?

If you believe their self-described origin story, the concept for a simpler, better men's apparel brand was born when founders Brian Berger and Michael Isaacman were "in a department store aisle full of brands that dominated [a man's] top drawer. Surrounded by a mind-numbing assortment of underwear and socks, [they] realized consistent fit and quality became a game of roulette… so [they] decided to take matters into our own hands."

Now, do I believe that's exactly how it happened? That these two guys were shopping together and suddenly decided to found a men's apparel brand using their own brand new fabric blends, unique stitching, and a user-oriented online shopping experience? No, I don't, frankly. But maybe a plethora of such experiences over time led to the motivation.

Regardless, I couldn't care much less what created the inspiration behind Mack Weldon. I'm just glad the company exists, because they make some of the best briefs, boxers, and shirts I've ever worn. The socks are nice, too.

This Danish startup invented underwear you can wear for weeks without washing — here's how it works

organic basics underpants underwear

  • "Underwear you can wear for weeks" sounds like an idea contrived by a bunch of young men— and so it is.
  • Four Danish innovators in their 20s have invented undergarments that only need washing a couple of times per month.
  • The special ingredient is silver, which kills 99.9% of all bacteria.

Yes, that's right — underpants you can wear for weeks without washing. But Organic Basics' mission as a company is not to advocate laziness amongst the younger generation, though it might seem the case.

No; it's all about saving the environment.

"Our business is sustainable fashion. The traditional way of buying, wearing, washing and throwing away overpriced underwear is a terrible waste of resources. And it is extremely harmful to the environment," says 27-year-old Mads Fibiger, CEO and co-founder of Organic Basics.

Washing and drying account for two-thirds of the total impact on the environment, and that is why Organic Basics got started on their underwear. The special ingredient is silver. This particular metal is antimicrobial which is why NASA uses silver to purify water for astronauts.

The underwear comes with a silver formula coating that kills 99.9% of all bacteria and odour in the garment, according to Organic Basics.

"It works. You can wear our underwear much longer before washing. You save time and money while we reduce the waste of water and energy," Mads Fibiger explains.

The underwear is made from 100% recycled material

The company launched its first collection of products in 2017 after the most crowdfunded fashion campaign in Scandinavia. Now Organic Basics are back with a new generation, Silvertech 2.0.

The products are now made from 100% recycled materials, and the silver treatment approved by the Bluesign system for sustainable textile production.

"We use mechanically recycled nylon which is extremely sustainable as a textile choice. The nylon's raw material is made from mechanically recycled nylon developed in Italy from post-industrial waste fiber, yarn from spinning factories, and waste from weaving mills. And we use a seamless knitting technology making the garment comfortable to wear even for longer periods of time."

organic basics underpants men

It's the fashion industry that's dirty — and it needs to change

The fashion industry, or rather the environment, needs a more sustainable approach. Right now the trade is on a trajectory towards more negative impact. A study from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation describes how the textile industry by 2050 will have tripled its energy consumption and thus account for 26% of global emissions, up from 2% in 2015.

Companies like Organic Brands are betting on consumers, especially the younger generation, choosing sustainability over iconic brands like Calvin Klein and Diesel. And time seems to be on their side. A 2015 study from Nielsen shows that 66% of global consumers are willing to pay more for a sustainable brand, and among millennials that number is even higher, 73%.

"We believe that the fashion industry is a dirty b*****d that has not contributed to a better environment. We want to show that it is possible to make great products at a reasonable price with 100% sustainability."

A 2-pack of SilverTech Boxers for men costs $64 while a 2-pack of Thong for women goes for $56. So far, the company has sold more than 200,000 underwear products to approximately 50,000 customers.

Organic Basics is currently conducting their fourth Kickstarter campaign.

NOW WATCH: Ian Bremmer: Why the American dream doesn't exist anymore

An online lingerie startup founded by a Victoria’s Secret alum recently launched a $35 wireless strapless bra — and it's surprisingly comfortable and supportive

lively bra thumb

  • LIVELY is a new online lingerie company that combines the style of traditional lingerie with the comfort of athleisure.
  • Adding to its collection of affordable bras ($35), underwear ($10), and swimwear ($45+), LIVELY released a new wireless, strapless bra ($35) that was met with great enthusiasm and is already backordered.
  • Though it's not perfect, we found it was a big improvement from the uncomfortable strapless bras we're used to wearing. That the bra manages to provide comfort and support while being wire-free is impressive.

Strapless bras are the bane of every woman's existence. In an incredible feat of engineering and daring, most strapless bras manage to simultaneously dig into your skin and slip down your chest every few minutes. I personally stopped wearing strapless tops and dresses altogether to avoid this uncomfortable reality. Other times, I've decide I simply don't care enough that my straps are showing.

For years, I had to choose between subtlety and comfort, but I recently tried a strapless bra that didn't compromise, and is completely affordable to boot.

Online lingerie startup LIVELY launched just two years ago in 2016 behind the leadership of Victoria's Secret veteran Michelle Cordeiro Grant, selling supportive and stylish bras for only $35. From the beginning, strapless bras were in high demand so the company started offering smooth and lace strapless bras the following year.

Now, LIVELY has made a strapless bra that's still offers shape and support, but without the pesky wires. The new No-Wire Strapless Bra can even be bent and rolled up, without affecting its shape, for easy packing.

lively bra onlyThe No-Wire Strapless comes in two solid, neutral colors, Toasted Almond and Jet Black. It's lightly lined with foam padding and the back closure has four hooks for extra security, while the band is a breathable mesh fabric. Since there's no wire, the bra derives its support from the back closure and the structured sides where the cups meet the mesh band.

I approached the bra with understandable skepticism, but came away happily surprised after wearing it under various shirts and dresses. Made with 85% nylon and 15% spandex, it's soft and also stretchy enough to give just the right amount of wiggle room without any gapping. I wasn't used to dealing with so many hooks in the back, but the extra hooks ultimately played an important role in keeping the bra up.

Though I could still tell I was wearing a strapless bra throughout the day, I certainly thought of it much less often than I usually do because it wasn't painful to wear and I didn't have to constantly wriggle around self-consciously to readjust its position. Instead, I could carry on with my day, supported yet undistracted.

toasted almond lively braInsider Picks reporter Mara Leighton also liked her bra:

I hate strapless bras — and I pretty much always have. But this LIVELY bra is one of the good ones; I actually, somehow, don’t mind wearing it — and it has sufficient support (even sans underwire) to accommodate a 32DD/34D. It has a no-slip strip that works without leaving me feeling like I’ve been segmented with cable wires to withstand gravity and motion.

The adjustable, removable straps mean I’ve even found myself turning to this bra for its stability in my every day life, thanks to that no-slip strip and a blessed four level hook-and-eye back closure I’m always excited to see. I wish it didn’t have the noticeable seam in the front, because it makes it difficult to wear under sheer or light-colored shirts, but, all in all, for $35 this is still one of the most comfortable and supportive strapless bras I’ve found. I would have paid more.

Admittedly, the wireless bra isn't perfect: it could be more size-inclusive (sizes currently range from 32A to 38DD) and as Mara mentions, the front seam can show through a thin white t-shirt or other thin materials like a silk slip dress.

However, overall it definitely exceeded my expectations by being more comfortable and supportive than any other strapless bra I've tried. At $35, it's also a great value buy, which LIVELY makes even more affordable by allowing you to mix and match two bras for $55 or three bras for $75.

  • Victoria's Secret isn't as much of an industry stronghold as it once used to be.
  • New lingerie brands like ThirdLove and True&Co are increasingly popular, and it's likely because they're spearheaded by women — a break from an industry ironically known to be a bit of a boys' club.
  • These new brands offer more inclusive size ranges and also rely heavily on customer feedback.
  • Keep reading to find out where you should buy your next bra.

Times, they are a-changin'.

Luckily for you and me, we've come a long way from the corset, and at least public opinion seems to be shifting ever-further from the Miracle Bra and its cousins. The culture shift and consumer demand is — as it is wont to do — causing an accompanying revolution in the market itself, potentially retiring once-iconic brands

In their place rises a new breed of women's lingerie, surprisingly almost exclusively spearheaded by fellow women — a break from an industry ironically known to be a bit of a boys' club. These up-and-coming women's lingerie companies have distinguishing aspects, but each seems to be moving resolutely in the direction of underwear that marries comfort with new or traditional lingerie styles, and at a relatively affordable price. Common incentives include more inclusive size ranges, transparency in production, and robustly using customer feedback as their production's guiding light.

And you can't rush perfection. Companies like Everlane have tinkered with 40 prototypes before releasing underwear, and startup ThirdLove spent over a year adding 24 new bra sizes to their line (reaching a total of 70 options).

These new undergarments have been designed to work with their customer's bodies and have, unsurprisingly, been met with much fanfare — with some wait lists for product releases exceeding 1 million women

Read on to find out what we like about six new lingerie brands — True&Co, Everlane, ThirdLoveKnix, Trusst, and LIVELY.

SEE ALSO: The internet can’t stop talking about these leggings made of recycled water bottles — and now I understand why

ThirdLove: 70 bra sizes, comfort, half cup sizes, and 100% fit guarantee.

ThirdLove, a five-year-old lingerie startup, is best known for inventing half cup sizes and an accompanying 100% fit guarantee. If you want to get closer to the exact right style, size, and shape for your body, this is where you should shop — and the ThirdLove team will be even more attentive than usual in helping you find the right match instead of an approximation.

They’re also our number one pick for the best bra and the best strapless you can buy.

Now, ThirdLove carries 70 bra sizes — 24 more than their previous offering and well above the industry average of 30. The initiative took over a year to put in place, and over 1.3 million women were on the waitlist. For founder Heidi Zak, it was a natural step forward. In order for more women to find their correct fit, there needed to be more options for them to choose between.

What to buy:

Knix: Soft, multi-task friendly bras and underwear that can do it all.

Knix wants to offer an option in between ultra-expensive lingerie and unappealing "granny panties." The company makes soft, multi-task friendly bras, tanks, underwear, and accessories.

Knix is best known for two standout inventions. One being the Evolution Bra, which was one of Kickstarter’s most successful campaigns ever — $1 million in sales and over 55,000 preorders alone. The promise was simple: A bra that could do it all — reversible, high performance, able to be worn eight different ways and made out of antimicrobial, quick-drying, moisture-wicking materials without wires. Joanna Griffith created it as the first bra she could truly wear all day without changing for separate occasions.

The company's second high-exposure moment has been with its leakproof line— underwear that promises to work as a replacement product or backup (with different levels of absorption) for your period.

What to buy:

Everlane: Transparency and super soft materials that serve as your luxe, high-quality basics.

Everlane, original direct-to-consumer wunderkind, makes radical transparency in production and pricing the bedrock of its business plan. The startup released underwear made from super soft Supima cotton in 2018 after 40 prototypes, and our team was really impressed in our testing.

Everlane set out to create a tier of underwear in between cheaply made basics and ornate, overpriced lingerie. We think they succeeded: The material is really soft, breathable, and "forgettable" in the best all-day-long way.

Currently, the collection includes a thong, hipster, high-waist hipster, shelf bra ($22), bodysuit ($30), and a pair of men's briefs($16). Women's underwear is $12 each, with three for $27.

mack weldon j crew prime cotton

  • Direct-to-consumer men's underwear startup Mack Weldon and J.Crew teamed up to create a new collection of underwear and undershirts using never-before-used technology called Prime Cotton.
  • Prime Cotton is made of long-staple cotton infused with temperature regulating nylon that actively cools you down as your body temperature rises.
  • In addition to its temperature regulating properties, the collection is of the same high quality you expect from J.Crew.
  • I was so impressed with its quality that I wore the undershirt as a normal t-shirt.

In just a few years, Mack Weldon, the direct-to-consumer startup behind the campaign "smart underwear for smart guys," created a huge fan following and became one of our favorite men's underwear brands. While a growing group of loyal customers and our praise for everything from its underwear to workout gear should say enough about the brand's quality, Mack Weldon is continuing to elevate itself by collaborating with J.Crew, a brand consumers have trusted for years.

As its latest crack at collaborative releases, Mack Weldon designed a new collection of underwear exclusively for J.Crew made from never-before-used technology called Prime Cotton.

The newly-innovated material comprises long-staple cotton and temperature-regulating nylon, which is designed to actively cool you down as your body temperature rises. According to J.Crew, Prime Cotton's proprietary technology doesn't exist in any other cotton product. The collection of underwear includes boxer briefs and trunks for $28, button-fly boxers for $32, and undershirts in crewneck and V-neck for $38.

Beyond its temperature regulating ability, Prime Cotton is special because it lives up to the timelessness and luxe factor we've come to expect from J.Crew. The material draws inspiration from soft ribbed cotton undergarments men have worn and loved for generations, while staying on-par with the more technical materials that are lightweight, breathable, and stretchy.

As a fan of Mack Weldon's underwear and J.Crew's apparel, I was excited to try the brands' collaboration. They sent me boxer briefs and a crewneck to test out, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that even as two of my personal go-to brands, they were better than I expected them to be. The ribbed cotton was soft and stretchy as opposed to feeling compressive and technical, and the underwear held up well against New York City's 100-degree weather. The Prime Cotton Collection really gives men the ability to bring their underwear to the same level of quality they uphold for clothing without resorting to performance undergarments worn by athletes.

If you've worn any other variation of Mack Weldon boxer briefs, you'll find that the overall fit of Prime Cotton boxer briefs is the same. They feature a covered waistband, so it won't roll or dig into your waist, and the legs are designed to stay in place, not ride up. Targeted mesh zones, one of my favorite parts of the Mack Weldon Silver Boxer Brief, don't exist on the J.Crew pair because the entire Prime Cotton material is light and airy. Initially, I thought it'd be a feature I'd miss, but I actually prefer the ribbed cotton over breathable sections from the Silver Boxer Brief.

J2901_EG7884_ld_A

I wore the crewneck separately on a different day where the temperature reached about 95 degrees. When I took the Prime Cotton Crewneck out of the packaging, I was surprised at how well made the shirt was, especially for something marketed as an undershirt. It was soft against my skin and the ribbed cotton design looked good enough to wear as a normal t-shirt, which I happily did. Once again, I stayed cool and managed to get through the day without wanting to peel the shirt off as soon as I was back inside. The material wasn't too thick, nor was it unsatisfyingly thin.

In the past, I've talked about the brand's relatively high prices being well worth it, and the J.Crew x Mack Weldon Prime Cotton Collection is yet another example to drive the point home. Yes, $28 to $32 for underwear and $38 for an undershirt may seem like a lot, but you'll see immediate and long-term value. The comfort and temperature regulating technology are attributes you'll appreciate on your first wear, while their ability to outlast cheaper underwear will save you money over time.

The J.Crew x Mack Weldon Prime Cotton Collection proves that direct-to-consumer brand can find success with traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, and transversely, that heritage brands can push the envelope in innovation without completely disconnecting from core consumers. Whether you're a fan of J.Crew, Mack Weldon, or both, I strongly recommend giving the new technology a try. I'm not saying you should replace all your underwear and undershirt at once, you'll definitely want more after your first few pieces.

Whether you're barely into clothes or the best dressed man in your office, there's one essential item you should never skimp on — undershirts.

Undershirts provide a necessary layer between you and your outer clothes to prevent unsightly sweat marks and subsequent stains.

You might be thinking, "nobody is going to see my undershirt anyway. Why shouldn't I buy the cheapest option available?"

Well, what makes an undershirt great isn't necessarily about how it looks. It's about how it feels, how it fits, and how it functions.

Traditional undershirts are ill-fitting at the collar, sleeves, torso, and rarely stay tucked in. After a few wears they're barely suitable to sleep in. If you're familiar with the headache that comes along with inferior undershirts, there is a solution — Tommy John.

Founded in 2008 by Tom Patterson with the help of his now-wife Erin Fujimoto-Patterson, Tommy John started with the goal of bringing men's undergarments into the 21st century.

After being impressed by the Tommy John Go Anywhere Collection, I thought it was necessary to experience what the startup is best known for. Unlike other brands, Tommy John's undershirts have a streamlined fit, so you won't have the feeling of a bunched up T-shirt under your clothes.

While other shirts are a struggle to stay neatly tucked, Tommy John uses a patented design that's a bit longer to guarantee a clean tuck all day long.

Tommy John sent over three different versions — Cool Cotton, Second Skin, and Air — for me to try out. While I was impressed with all three, each serve a specific purpose to suit you best.

If you're interested in v-necks, deep v-necks or tank tops, they're available, too.

Tommy John Cool Cotton Crew Neck Undershirt

The Tommy John Cool Cotton undershirt is a great choice if you tend to run hot or sweat easily. Made out of Pima Cotton and Spandex, the blend of materials is designed to wick moisture away from your body and keep you up to three times cooler than normal cotton.

As someone who's worn normal cotton undershirts for a long time, the difference is definitely noticeable. One of the most uncomfortable feelings is sweating right through your undershirt and onto your actual shirt. That wasn't a problem with Tommy John's option.

Whether you like crewnecks, v-necks or tank tops, this material is a solid choice. You'll also get to choose between white, black, and tan.

Tommy John Second Skin Crew Neck Undershirt

The Tommy John Second Skin lives up to its name. While other undershirts are uncomfortable because they're too loose and ill-fitting or too tight, the Second Skin fits well and is super soft. It's made out of 90% Non-Pilling Micro Modal and 10% Spandex. I wore this shirt all day with button up dress shirt and it almost felt like I wasn't wearing an undershirt at all (while still having the all the benefits of having one on.)

Whether you like crewnecks, v-necks or tank tops, this material is a solid choice. You'll also get to choose between white, black, and tan.

Tommy John Second Skin Crew Neck Undershirt, $43

Tommy John Air Crew Neck Undershirt

The Tommy John Air undershirt is definitely my favorite out of all the ones I've tested. It's super light weight and is made out of breathable materials, which is something that I can appreciate, especially on really hot days.

It's made out of 77% Nylon Mesh and 23% Spandex, and when you put it on, you'll notice that it's so light that it's slightly transparent. Despite it being fall, it's nearly 80 degrees in New York City, so I naturally got a little sweaty walking to work. But after only a few minutes I was dry and comfortable.

This quick drying material is also great for travelers; pack one Tommy John Air undershirt, wash it out at the end of the day in your hotel sink and it'll be ready to wear again in a few hours.

The Air undershirts come in crewneck, v-neck, and tank tops, but are only available in white.

download 1Whether you're the most stylish person ever or the type who absolutely hates stepping foot in a store, there are certain articles of clothing all men must buy — like underwear.

For most guys, shopping for clothes is a task that is best kept short and sweet, so items like boxers, socks, and T-shirts are often bought only when its absolutely necessary.

Chances are your sock and underwear drawer is filled with pieces that could use replacing.

A seemingly simple trip to the store for new pieces could result in a long, drawn-out process of comparing brands, styles, and prices. Luckily, there's a one-stop solution to shopping for underwear, and you won't ever have to leave home again.

Founded in 2014 by husband and wife team Laura and Michael Dweck, Basic Outfitters is a brand that looks to simplify underwear shopping with its Create-a-Drawer bundle. The Basic Outfitters Create-a-Drawer bundle comprises socks, underwear, undershirts, and one "wild card" item (either sweatpants or more socks and underwear). Simply choose your favorite styles/colors in each category and you'll receive a package that will fully freshen up your underwear drawer.

Aside from the convenience the Create-a-Drawer bundle provides, the value is amazing. At just $60, you get all the items you need without the hassle of going to the store. The startup's founders recently presented the bundle on "Shark Tank," and it was well received by the show's entrepreneurs, too.

If you never want to deal with the headache of buying all new undershirts, socks, and underwear separately at a high cost, Basic Outfitters is the solution.

I recently got to give the brand a try and was extremely pleased with the quality and convenience it offered. Check out how easy it is and my favorite picks, below:

Pick out your socks.

First, you get to pick out socks. Whether you're looking for a toned-down pack of dress socks with stripes and polka dots, fun patterned no shows, or simple gym socks, you'll find it here. There's even a "Shark Tank" pack to celebrate the brand's success on the show.

I went with the 10-pack of low-cut athletic socks because you can never have too many gym socks. It comes with 5 pairs of black and 5 pairs of grey. Made out of a polyester and spandex blend, the socks are super soft and feature reinforced cushioning on the heels and toes. I've worn and wash them multiple times and they've maintained their shape.

Pick out your underwear.

Next, you get to pick out your underwear. Basic Outfitters offers boxer briefs, boxers, and briefs in a wide variety; you can get ones that are geared toward performance, super soft comfort, fun designs, or basic colors.

To keep it simple, I went with the black boxer brief 3-pack. What I like most about these boxer brief is that they fit well, never ride up, and provide all-day comfort. They're made out cotton and spandex, and feature a reinforced pouch and a stay put waistband.

Pick out your undershirts.

The third step is to pick undershirts. While the selection of undershirts is small, you'll be able to find exactly what you need to fill your drawer. They offer crewneck and V-neck T-shirts in white or multicolor packs, as well as tank tops.

I went with the tank tops and they definitely fit better than any tank top undershirt I've bought at the store. They're soft, form fitting, but not restrictive. Overall, they serve they purpose extremely well.

This startup makes the most comfortable pair of underwear I’ve ever worn

PandaI've tried many subscription services over the past few years.

Most of them have been tied to digital goods, including music and video games, but a year and a half ago I started a monthly subscription for underwear.

As someone who doesn't really know or care much about fashion — especially when it concerns items that I put on under other clothes — it was a little odd at first.

But I kept hearing about MeUndies on a couple of podcasts I listened to, and the service sounded kind of fun. For $16 a month, I would receive one pair of comfortable underwear with a unique print. Having recently updated my sock drawer with fun, colorful options, I assumed I'd subscribe to MeUndies for a couple of months as a fun treat.

A year and a half later I'm still a subscriber, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

My continued subscription comes down to two things: comfort and fun. MeUndies underwear is, quite frankly, the most comfortable underwear I've ever owned. Each pair I've worn has been light, not too tight, and very soft; these are attributes you want out of clothing that's in direct contact with your skin all day.

As for fun, well, it's nice to put on underwear that isn't just a single, solid color, even if you're the only one who knows you're wearing them. There's no way I'd have gone out of my way to pick out a pair of panda-print underwear, but I was delighted when that pair appeared in my mailbox.

MeUndies has changed their structure a little bit since I started subscribing, but it's still very simple to understand. Subscribers choose between three plans: classic, bold, and adventurous, and are sent one pair of underwear from those styles.

Classic subscribers will receive a pair of neutral, single-colored underwear; bold subscribers will receive a pair of slightly more daring, single-colored underwear; and adventurous subscribers will receive a pair of underwear with a fun, one-of-a-kind print.

I've been an "adventurous" subscriber for the duration of my subscription, and have received some very cool looking underwear. My MeUndies are always what I reach for first after doing my laundry, and when they run out, it encourages me to do another load.

Paying to get a fun pair of underwear delivered to you once a month may come off as a little silly, and I agree it's a total luxury, but it's an indulgence I highly recommend. It's not overly expensive, and you can always cancel your subscription after a few months if you find they're not for you. But be warned, I went in with the same expectation and quickly changed my tune.

These undershirts solve one of the biggest problems guys have with them

2Q==Any guy who wears undershirts probably has a few qualms with them.

They’re made to fit every guy, not to fit you, so depending on your body type, your undershirt will ride up in some places or constrict in others.

After wearing Tommy John's undershirts, I can tell you that if you’re frustrated with your current undershirts, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Tommy John was founded on the belief that undershirts could be so much better.

Founder and CEO Tom Patterson was frustrated he couldn’t find an undershirt that suited his needs. He wanted one that would fit flush with his body without riding up or showing through his dress shirt, so he decided to make his own. He found the right materials, made some shirts, and a few trials later, Tommy John was born.

As soon as you try on a Tommy John undershirt it is easy to tell the difference. They're amazingly soft, and the one I’ve been wearing has remained that way after a few washes, not falling apart as I’ve seen my less-engineered undershirts do. Once the undershirt is on, it’s clear that Patterson accomplished his goal — it fits tight and snug without restriction, allowing your body to move freely while keeping everything in place.

The fit of the undershirt struck me as a bit odd at first to be honest; I usually don’t do well with tight-fitting clothes, and it took me a while to get used to how the shirt fell on my body. But once I adjusted, the freedom it allowed and the comfort it provided for the rest of my outfit was very apparent. It didn’t hang uncomfortably into my pants or scrunch up around my gut in different seated positions. It's an undershirt that truly works to complement the rest of your look.

Tommy John Undershirt

Now, Tommy John undershirts start at around $40, and I completely understand why many will scoff at the price. You already have your undershirts that work for you and they only cost $15 for a pack of five, so why would you ever spend twice that on one shirt? It’s solid logic, and if that’s how you feel, Tommy John is not the brand for you.

But if you are looking to get the most out of your clothes and feel your best in your dress shirts, check out what Tommy John has to offer. I tried out the Cool Cotton Deep V-Neck and it worked out great for me. They have crew necks and tank tops as well, and all are available in various materials, so there’s something for everyone.

If you're looking to add a few super high-quality undershirts to your wardrobe, Tommy John has got you covered.

You can check out all the undershirts and underwear Tommy John has to offer here.

Bonobos launched in 2007 with just one item: a pair of extremely well-made pants

A decade later, the company has a much more varied inventory and continues to innovate with apparel like the Tech Chino, which Insider Picks named the perfect pair of work pants earlier this year.

Now, Bonobos is taking a crack at the most essential piece of apparel for men — underwear — and it's a home run.

Simply named Bonobos Underwear, the company's design approach is revolutionary, yet so simple it makes you wonder why it's never been done before now.

Most men's underwear comes in alpha sizes like small, medium, and large, but Bonobos Underwear comes in waist sizes, from 28" to 40" waists. By using the same methodology that goes into finding the best fit in pants, you'll never have to worry about fitting into general underwear sizes.

Available as 5" inseam boxer briefs and 3" inseam trucks, each pair of Bonobos Underwear uses a stretch waistband that never restricts you and super soft anti-microbial, moisture-wicking fabric for maximum comfort. Here are my thoughts after wearing and washing the boxer briefs several times:

When I first heard about Bonobos Underwear, I expected it to be well-made because of my previous experience with the company's clothes. But once I learned that it was sized based on my waist measurement, I was really excited to try a pair for myself. At one point or another, every guy has had an issue with underwear that feels too tight or loose, and even if you think you've found a brand with traditional sizes that fit you well, Bonobos' exact sizing is a noticeably better fit.

Bonobos Underwear

Aside from the amazing waist fit, what I like most about Bonobos Underwear is the H-fly construction because, in my opinion, it seems wrong not to include a fly on men's underwear. It's also much easier to use than the traditional fly found on most underwear. The perforated panels on the front and back are another great feature. No matter how hot it is outside or how hot you tend to get, the panels do a great job of keeping you cool and comfortable all day long.

At $34 a pair, Bonobos Underwear is expensive, but with a perfect fit and elevated features, it's well worth the money. You're definitely going to want multiple pairs, so use the promo code "BEBRIEF" at checkout to get two pairs for $50.
